Criteria for Membership

Graduate faculty in the Departments of English and Communication are eligible for membership on the Program Faculty of the Ph.D. in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media. Each nomination is considered individually, but suitability for membership is generally based on the following criteria. Members of the CRDM Program Faculty must:

  1. be full or associate members of the Graduate Faculty and hold full-time tenure-track positions at NC State University.
  2. have an active program of research or scholarship that contributes to the focus, scope, and goals of the CRDM curriculum, as indicated by scholarly specialization, publications, grants, etc.;
  3. have a strong record of teaching and advising and be able to teach doctoral-level courses suitable to the Program;
  4. be willing to play an active role in the Program by, for example, serving as a graduate advisor for students, serving on administrative committees, being a member of an examination or dissertation committees, and participating in the academic and social life of the Program.
Nomination and Selection Process
  1. Faculty may be nominated by members of the Program Committee or other faculty and administrators, or they may nominate themselves.
  2. Following the nomination, a nominee is invited to apply for membership and is responsible for providing all necessary materials listed below to the Program Committee. The materials include:
    • A brief letter of application that outlines the nominee?s credentials and interests, calling attention to relevant information in the supporting documents, particularly as they address the criteria listed above;
    • A CV or URL to an electronic CV; this should include information about teaching (courses taught, innovations, etc.);
    • Confirmation of Graduate Faculty status from the nominee?s department head or the director of graduate studies in the nominee?s department.
  3. The Program Committee will review nominations based on the criteria and decide on the suitability of the candidate's membership on the Program Faculty. The Chair will inform the candidate of the Committee's decision with a copy to the candidate's department head.
